Design and Construct

This was a BIM enabled project to construct a new extension for
the school which now accommodates a new hall, kitchen and link
area. Some refurbishment of the existing school building was also
required, with a total project area of 230 sqm

  • Contractor and design teams developed an integrated 3D
model to include architectural, structural and building services
to RIBA Stage 5 with a tagged level of detail between L100
and L300. This pushed the boundaries of collaboration
leading to improved design and increased efficiency. It
also allowed use as a communication tool for the school/
stakeholders, smoothed negotiations with the conservation
officer and also enabled input into room data sheets

School Engagement and Student Development

  • Pupils and teachers were invited to sign the steel beams for
the extension to involve them in the school’s development
  • Regular visits of the site by the school council and governors
were also encouraged to give updates on project progress

Sustainability and Localism

  • 20 apprenticeship weeks were accommodated during the
project which included brickworkers, roofers and electricians
  • 80% of the labour force was based within 30km of the project
  • There was a strong commitment to the segregation of waste
on site with 99% of all site waste diverted from landfill

“The relationship between ISG and the client was excellent.
Communication was excellent with all parties. ISG had
a good relationship with the community which is very
important with a rural school. ISG are very accommodating with
site visits, including children, staff, governors and community.”
Andy Ramsden, Headteacher, Barrow C.E. Primary School
