Classroom extensions and refurbishment at
four primary schools in the Chester district as
part of the council’s Basic Needs Programme
• Works were undertaken at Acresfield Primary School,
Cherry Grove Primary School, Highfield Primary School
and Upton West Lea Primary School
• The contractor value engineered initial design proposals
to reduce costs and time to meet the client’s budgetary
requirements. This totalled £135k across the four sites
• 74 tonnes of site waste was diverted from landfill.
Materials were reused where possible including fencing,
top soil and excavation materials. At Cherry Grove there
was a focus on manual work with no petrol devices used
• Three sites participated in the Considerate Constructors
Scheme, achieving an average score of 35.5 out of 40
• Innovative ways to encourage school and contractor
interaction included the pupils choosing the scheme
finishes at Acresfield and support for Cherry Grove’s end
of year talent show including judging and the donation of
gift cards as prizes totalling £280

“This is a worthy tribute to your professionalism and
attention to detail…and represents the wide diversity
of practice which is needed to keep operatives safe,
neighbours happy and users engaged. Well done!”
