Delivery Type

This two-storey extension and refurbishment project involved close community and client liaison from the start. Working within the confines of a live leisure centre and car park, with students sitting exams at the adjacent Flixton Girls school, the project team put coordination and collaboration at the forefront of their delivery plans.

Starting with the careful demolition of the existing 1980s reception, community rooms and gym, noisy works were scheduled around exam timetables, while upgrades to existing M&E systems and facilities were planned in conjunction with the centre manager. The swimming pool, fitness suite, sports hall and car park remained open for the majority of the project.

The facilities now include a glass façade with a seven metre clip n’ climb wall, a large fitness suite with the latest cardio and strength equipment, a functional training zone, modern changing village, three fitness and wellbeing studios, a 25-metre L-shaped swimming pool, a five-court sports hall, brand new café with seating for over 100 people, two party rooms, a sensory room and a wellbeing assessment suite.

Community Engagement
• A total of five new apprenticeships were created on the project, with an additional 11 existing apprentices supported, achieving an impressive 102.6 apprentice weeks in total.
• The project delivered nine educational activities and nine community events.
• The site team hosted a work experience student from Flixton Girls School.

“Working alongside a range of different construction professionals, the placement gave her a flavour of different roles within construction. It was clear to see that the team cared about what they were delivering and that they wanted to deliver a finished product that they could be proud of. They have been a pleasure to work with and I would look forward to working with ISG again in the future.” Craig Lomas, Leisure Centre Manager
