Construction talk works wonders as promise of work experience encourages student to continue studies
NWCH Framework Partner, Seddon Construction have recently taken part in educating youngsters in more ways than one as part of their recent project at Matthew Moss High School.
Project Skills Manager, Emma Dempster and Site Manager, Glen Brown worked closely with a student who had become disillusioned and had no interest in attending school. That all changed after one of several talks with students about working within the construction industry which piqued the interest of the student who then approached the contractor.
The contractor have agreed to provide him with work experience by allowing him on site to interact with the other workers, learn more about construction and have a hands on approach to learning. This is for 1-2 hours per week as long as the student continues to attend school and continue his studies.
On top of this inspiring work, the contractor have recycled sand from the site back to the school which has been used in their long jump pit, as well as timber planks from the site which the school are using to create planters.
“Seddon Construction won the tender for a ten classroom extension at MMHS. The tender showed good understanding of working alongside an operational school, it was clear in the process described to segregate and coordinate works in order to minimise disruption and deliver the project on time.
This level of professionalism has continued throughout the build.
The site manager is considerate and approachable, he liaises with neighbours regularly and communicates with the school very effectively. The site is well managed – deliveries arrive outside peak times and contractors follow all safeguarding guidance issued by school.
Meetings with Seddon Construction and designers are positive and productive, with a shared aim to deliver the best outcome for the school and it’s learners. We highly recommend Seddon Construction to other schools.” Karen Neville, Assistant Head of Business and Finance, Matthew Moss High School
