‘Have a Go’ event inspires the next generation of construction enthusiasts
After the success of the Have a Go event in North Manchester on Valentines day, North West Construction Hub and their contractor partners teamed up to replicate the event at the Power House in Moss Side targeting Schools in Central Manchester.
This was a collaborative event in partnership with the North West Construction Hub, its contractors and supply chain. The event took place on the 5th July 2018 where 100 primary school pupils and 80 secondary school students from schools across Central Manchester attended. The event, which also offered a community drop in session, gave young people and local residents the opportunity to ‘have a go’ at traditional trade activities such as plastering, bricklaying, joinery and decorating, whilst getting a glimpse into digital construction at the BIM stall and by using VR headsets. STEM engagement activities were also delivered to primary and secondary school pupils and personality quizzes were available to help pupils see what construction roles could suited to them.
Manchester City Council’s Work and Skills Team supported the event by having a stall to promote an array of careers in construction.
The event proved to be a huge success with some great feedback received from the schools who attended which will be taken into future events to make them even more successful than this one.
