Levenshulme sports centre – 5 years on…

Back in 2016, Laing O’Rourke completed on site at Levenshulme sports centre. Since completion, we take a look back at this state of the art facility and how it has provided many benefits to the local community groups…

  • The Library has increased its foot fall from 42,000 visits per year to 116,000 per year
  • The Leisure centre now has a foot fall of 17,000 per month
  • 2 swimming pools has allowed them to reach out to other group who may never of used the old facility. This includes a special needs school who utilise the pools for their Year 4’s
  • Friday Night Youth Zone for kids aged from 11 -18 – this is a diverse group from different ethnic backgrounds. It is run by Levenshulme Youth Partnership and promotes respect and understanding, breaking down tribal boundaries
  • The NHS have also started to utilise the centre for rehabilitation. They hold 6 sessions a week for stroke, heart attack and GP referral patients
  • They have tailored fitness and swimming classes to meet the needs of community groups that include Muslim Female only groups. This was identified by holding public meetings with the community and listening to feedback sessions to obtain the best use of the building. They had 3,60o feedback forms – promoting community love
  • Manchester Active Children with free weekend and school holiday swimming
  • ‘Fit Street’ where they select a Street from the local area and give them free access to the facilities for a week
  • They have had ASB problems from a few youths and they have implemented ‘restorative justice’
  • All staff have been trained in conflict prevention and understanding, winning awards along the way
  •  Community Surgeries and they support the LGBT group while promoting external events and religious celebrations
  • They have delivered 2,353 pupil engagement sessions since opening in February 2016
  • 27 of the 33 employees live within the local area
  • Staff retention is excellent with promotion of staff on to management courses being a constant
  • They have attained IIP Silver
  • Won an award for centre of the year for their performance, engagement and quality
