M-Futures apprentice programme vital in delivering world-class cultural space
Apprenticeships are a key objective as part of the social value delivery for The Factory. This includes ensuring the creation of new apprentice opportunities for local people throughout the design, construction and end use of the project.
‘M-Futures’ is a two year apprentice programme delivered in partnership with Manchester College, Total People and employers across Manchester. The apprenticeship provides a HNC in construction and Level 4 Diploma in Construction and Building Services Management.
The programme is unique in that it provides the apprentice with the option of rotating placements with a group of employers over the two year period and provides a wide range of insight into the industry.
Supported by Manchester City Council, the programme has seen success on previous projects procured via the NWCH High Value Framework and delivered by Laing O’Rourke. This included the Manchester Town Hall Complex Transformation, with apprentices going on to gain permanent employment with companies involved.
Aspiring to replicate this success as part of The Factory project, the council facilitated a briefing on the programme attended by key construction, design and consultant teams on the project.
Following the briefing, employer companies Laing O’Rourke and Buro Happold took part in a ‘speed interview’ day at Manchester College and successfully selected candidates to employ on the programme.
The two candidates selected began their apprenticeship and employment in early September 2018 and are progressing well.
“I’ve always wanted a career in construction and was exploring different apprenticeship options when I found out about M-Futures. What appealed to me most about this apprenticeship was the fact that you could explore different aspects of construction and get an insight and background knowledge in more than one section of the industry. I’m really enjoying working with Laing O’Rourke on the Factory so far and I am excited to see this exciting project through.”
