Urmston Leisure Centre win for ISG
The project to transform the dated and underused building will see a section of the leisure centre demolished to enable the construction of a new two-storey steel frame extension. The existing accommodation will also be refurbished and reconfigured, providing enhanced accessibility and more efficient spatial planning as Trafford Council brings a host of new fitness facilities onto site.
A new climbing wall will be installed, changing areas will be enhanced and a contemporary fitness suite and group exercise studios will be created. Urmston Leisure Centre will gain additional community spaces and a sensory room, alongside a new café and reception area. The centre will remain open throughout the duration of the redevelopment, which is
scheduled for completion in early 2020.
Paul Munro, ISG’s regional director for the North West, commented: “The drive to increase active participation in sport brings huge benefits to health outcomes, as well as strengthening community bonds. Delivering modern spaces that support active lifestyles is key to this wider agenda, with the significant investment in Urmston Leisure Centre demonstrating Trafford’s progressive approach to delivering the highest quality public amenities.”
“The use of the NWCH procurement route has proved instrumental in our ability to forward plan and develop robust logistical strategies for this complex project. This early engagement has enabled us to maintain public access to the centre throughout the duration of the scheme and mitigate our impact on the adjacent school and residential area.”
Cllr Jane Baugh, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “The refurbishment of Urmston Leisure Centre represents a significant investment by Trafford Council to improve the leisure facilities for the residents of Urmston and the surrounding communities. The health and wellbeing of our residents is a top priority.”
“The Council is also delighted that the project has given the pupils of the neighbouring Flixton Girls School the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge around the development and construction of a leisure centre by a leading construction company.”
